PRESENTATION TOPIC“Prevention through Design, which an emerging safety management technique to achieve project goals relating safety and health”

SPEAKER: T. Michael Toole, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Toledo

Moderator: John Zickafoose, President, PMI WLEC

DESCRIPTION OF SESSION:

Prevention through Design (PtD) is an emerging safety management innovation in which design professionals consider the safety of all individuals affected by their design from cradle to grave, including construction and maintenance workers.  PtD is part of a Triple Bottom Line approach to sustainable development that requires integrated design and construction to achieve project goals.  The presentation will summarize the PtD concept, give examples, summarize the practical safety and economic benefits that are driving nations around the globe to require PtD, capital project owners to require PtD on their projects, and OSHA and NIOSH to promote the PtD concept.  Practical tips for implementing PtD within your firm and/or on your project will be given.
